Day 10 - Sulfate mines & Speed boat to Santa Cruz

Hidden deep within the rugged highlands of Isabela Island lies the Sulfate Mines, a fascinating site that reveals the island’s volcanic and human history. Located near the slopes of Sierra Negra Volcano, this area was once mined for sulfur during the mid-20th century, when local workers extracted the mineral used for industrial and medical purposes.Today, the site offers visitors a glimpse into a unique chapter of Galápagos history. As you hike through the misty, high-altitude landscape, you’ll pass through lava fields, fumaroles, and lush vegetation before reaching the old mining camp. The remnants of equipment and rustic buildings, surrounded by dramatic volcanic scenery, tell stories of endurance and isolation in one of the world’s most remote environments. By the afternook we will take a speed boat to Santa Cruz

Gordon Rocks is an extinct volcanic crater with a sandy bottom at 32 meters, and a wall drop off around the outside of around 65 meters . It has 3 exposed rocks that surround the crater and 3 pinnacles ranging from 5- 6 meters under the surface along the northern edge of the crater with one larger pinnacle approximately 21 meters below the surface in the center.

The strong currents that frequent Gordon Rocks make it the most accessible home to schools of the famous hammerhead sharks. Schools of up to 50 sharks (or more if you are lucky) can be found circling the rocks through the current giving repeated views of the amazing creatures. White and black tip reef sharks also frequent the area as well as green sea turtles, sea lions, sting rays, Eagle rays, large schools of barracuda and snapper and the occasional majestic manta ray or Mola Mola.
